Into the Minds of Paranormal Investigators: How they Work

When looking at paranormal investigators (PI’s), one usually sees them with various tools and equipment: EMF detectors, temperature sensors, static electricity and ionization detectors, and significant paranormal research software. Some say they’re keen, serious, and weird. Others might ask: what lurks inside the minds of these investigators that they deal with such bizarre paranormal cases? Paranormal analysts look just like ordinary people in many ways; they have family, jobs, concerns, etc. What makes them different from others is their interest in cracking those peculiar phenomena that some people experience, especially about ghosts. The list below tells about the key points they consider during investigations. 1.The Focus The focus of all paranormal investigators is to help people who have experienced several disturbing paranormal events in their lives. While doing investigations, the following things will always be in their mind: 2. The Expectations Expect the unexpected. This is what a PI always considers while conducting the quest. Dealing with several ghosts and spirits is unpredictable. Expecting the worst is what they think to condition their mind for whatever happens, and whatever they’ll find out. They’re brave enough to face ghosts and spirits. 3. The Philosophy These one-of-a-kind investigators have certain philosophies, which keeps them in this extraordinary job. They strongly believe that: Definitely, paranormal investigators are serious. They take cases seriously and do not stop until they get necessary information for their research. All of these are taken into consideration to make the whole investigation successful, so that everyone will be at peace. Webb Paranormal Group are professional paranormal investigators who will take your case seriously. Give them a call today for help.

What lies behind ghosts, demons and aliens – according to sleep researchers

Captblack76/Shutterstock.com Alice M Gregory, Goldsmiths, University of London If you believe in the paranormal you might not be surprised if you hear stories of deceased loved ones appearing during the night, huge explosions heard just as someone is drifting off with no obvious cause, and other peculiar occurrences. But what if you don’t? My interest in the paranormal started with an impromptu coffee with a colleague, Chris French, who researches reports of #paranormal experiences. He told me stories of countless people who had recounted such events. These experiences tended to start while lying in bed. Then something unusual would happen – perhaps a demon would appear or the environment would seem strange or there would be a sensed presence. The person having this experience might also report being glued to their mattress, tarmacked into the bed, totally unable to move. It’s unsurprising that people who experience such things might interpret them as paranormal. But certain phenomena such as sleep paralysis provide an alternative to paranormal explanations for such occurrences. Hence my interest in the subject, as a sleep researcher. Sleep paralysis When we sleep, we cycle through different stages. We start the night in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep – which gets progressively deeper. We then cycle back until we hit rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During REM sleep we are most likely to have vivid dreams. At this stage, we are also paralyzed, perhaps as a safety mechanism to stop us acting out our dreams so that we don’t end up attempting to fly. But during #sleep paralysis, features of REM sleep continue into waking life. Those who experience it will feel awake yet might experience dream-like hallucinations and struggle to move. This experience is pretty common, occurring in around 8% of people (although estimates vary dramatically depending on who we are asking). It’s even possible to induce sleep paralysis in some people, by disrupting their sleep in specific ways. Certain researchers, French among them, believe that this explains a huge number of paranormal accounts. Information about sleep paralysis is finally seeping into public awareness, but we now need to understand more about this common complaint. Our preliminary work, which I recount in my new book Nodding Off: The science of sleep from cradle to grave, hints at possible genetic and environmental explanations for why some people are more likely than others to experience sleep paralysis. This now needs to be replicated using much larger samples. Reviewing the literature, we have also highlighted a host of other variables associated with this common experience, including stress, trauma, psychiatric difficulties and physical illnesses. The worst dreams.Creativa Images/Shutterstock.com Exploding head syndrome Sleep paralysis aside, how else are sleep researchers helping to explain paranormal experiences? People sometimes describe experiencing huge explosions during the night which simply can’t be explained. There is no sign that a shelf has fallen down or a car has backfired. There is no one playing the electric guitar next to their head. Again, this can be linked to our sleep – this time explained by “exploding head syndrome”, a term coined relatively recently by the neurologist JMS Pearce. When we fall asleep, the reticular formation of the brainstem (a part of our brain involved in consciousness) typically starts to inhibit our ability to move, see and hear things. When we experience a “bang” in our sleep this might be because of a delay in this process. Instead of the reticular formation shutting down the auditory neurons, they might fire at once. As with sleep paralysis, this phenomenon is also under-researched. For this very reason, in 2017 my colleagues and I joined forces with BBC Focus and Brian Sharpless, a leading expert on this phenomenon, to collect data on this topic. Imps and ghouls Finally, what might scientists make of precognitive dreams? We might dream of a friend we haven’t seen for years only to have them call us the very next day. French thinks science can provide an explanation for this too. Referencing work by John Allen Paulos that focuses on probabilities, he explains how such an occurrence may be surprising on any single day, but over time, quite likely to occur. Researching my book, I spoke to Mrs Sinclair, who is 70, and lives alone. She told me about what she had thought was a #ghost living in her house, an #imp throttling her during the night and other things that had left her petrified. Having scientific explanations provided her with immense comfort and she no longer believes in paranormal explanations for the things that she experienced. Our hope is that scientific explanations of paranormal experiences might help others by lowering anxiety. Decreasing anxiety has also been hypothesised as a potential method by which to reduce sleep paralysis. So, perhaps providing more information about these unusual experiences might even mean that things are less likely to go bump in the night. Ghost Stories- The Dancing Ghost of Coffee County, AL

The tale of the dancing #ghost of William Henry “Grancer” Harrison Jr. grew in popularity with the writing of the book, “13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey.” This book was written by the famous Alabama author, Kathryn Windham-Tucker in 1969. In the closing of her book, she talks about the Harrison cemetery. You may ask, ‘where did he get the name of Grancer?’ The name “Grancer” actually means “Grand-Sir” or “Grand Sire” and it is a term of affection. It is an old Scottish term for grandfather.  The tale of William Henry Harrison Jr and his dancing ghost begins in the late 1800’s on a dirt road in Coffee County, Alabama. It was a Saturday evening, a horse-drawn carriage was clip-clopping along a dirt trail. Inside a family was enjoying the ride together at the end of a long day.  Suddenly, a chill consumes everyone inside the buggy as they cross another dirt road. The horses drawing the buggy become very anxious and agitated. The soft sounds of a fiddle playing can be heard. In addition, there are noises, which sound much like dancing coming from the area up ahead.  Grancer Harrison’s favorite night for his parties was Saturday. Which is probably why most odd happenings around his tomb occur on a Saturday night.  To learn more, check out this ghostly tale in the YouTube video link below:

The Haunting of the White House

#Ghosts have been a part of myth and #history for an inordinate amount of time. Nobody can pinpoint when the first #ghost was spotted or felt. They are here to stay as far as people are concerned. Many people describe ghost as entities or the spirits of those who have died but have remained on earth whether by choice or force. Unbeknown to many citizens of the USA, especially those who reside on the West Coast. Most don’t pay much attention to the ongoings of the East Coast, the greatest house in the country is also known for being a #haunted house. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, we are talking about #the White House in Washington D. C. There have been countless accounts spanning the course of history of ghost sightings that have been tied to the White House. Not just sightings either, but the eerie presence of not being alone in that big house and someone from the past looking over your shoulder. From presidents to wives and servants, there is a lot of history in that house and some of it has stayed through the passage of time. At Your Service, Mr. President Seven score and fourteen years ago, a tragedy befell the great nation of the #United States when John Wilkes Booth snuck up behind the 16th President and ended his life as well as any further good he could have done the country with a single bullet. Although #Abraham Lincoln may be gone physically there have been rumors and sightings of Honest Abe wandering the White House. Abraham Lincoln died in 1865 and if rumors of his ghost remaining in the White House are true, he has #haunted the place for over 150 years. People have reported seeing Lincoln standing by windows overlooking the White House grounds and if he was watching or waiting for something, while others have been awoken to a knock on their door from the esteemed President himself. #Eleanor Roosevelt never saw Abraham Lincoln herself, but she told stories about how she was able to feel a presence in the room with her and she believed it to be Lincoln due to the melancholic air that the President was rumored to be constantly surrounded by since the life he lived was a tragic one. At Ease, Mr. President One of the #theories behind the presence of ghosts is that they have unfinished business to attend to and only after that is complete can they move on and rest in peace. So what would be the unfinished business President Lincoln has hanging over his head making it impossible for him to find peace in the afterlife? One of the reasons people believe Lincoln is not ready to move on is that he is still watching over the country that he loved so much. The timing of Lincoln making himself known to the guest of the White House is when the United States seems to be nearing a disaster of some sort. It brings a little comfort knowing that he is still watching over us even in death. Another possibility for the continuing presence of #Abe Lincoln in the White House is the death of his son Willie. Lincoln’s son died when he was 11, inside in the White House, Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln never recovered from losing him. His parents have recorded sightings of him when they lived there. Abe Lincoln may not want to lose his son again and chose to remain there with him

Memorial Day Celebrations on the USS Battleship North Carolina

#Memorial Day is the day set aside once a year in which we celebrate and give thanks to the United States Military. We remember those who gave their lives so that we could live a better one. Memorial Day is this Monday, May 27, 2019, and the USS Battleship North Carolina will be celebrating the holiday. Aboard the #Battleship #North Carolina, Memorial Day celebrations begin with a military guest speaker, and are followed by (not particularly in this order) a 21-gun salute by the Marine Corps Honor Guard, an all-service Color Guard, the playing of Taps by a military band, and finally by tossing a memorial wreath into the water. The town of #Wilmington has something special to share this Memorial Day. Along the slew of the #Cape Fear River, is a very regal and distinguished item—the USS Battleship North Carolina. The people of Wilmington invite guests of the town to visit this wondrous battleship and walk its decks. You can imagine the days when the crew aboard it went about their daily lives and came across fierce battles in the Pacific Theatre during the #World War The young men aboard the #USS North Carolina were raised during the Great Depression; they were unwavering in their desire to serve this country during a most needy time. It is these men, now much older, who will share their stories, old photographs, and memoirs with you. You will also be able to browse along the decks and check out the many exhibits aboard this mighty battleship. This Memorial Day you can take a step back and relive the days of the USS North Carolina. You can try to picture yourself navigating the waters, starting up the engines and even firing off the guns. On June 15, 2019, Webb Paranormal Group is going to perform an investigation of the USS North Carolina to learn more about the past people and events that occurred on the ship.

The Top Three Scientific Explanations for Ghost Sightings

#Paranormal or just plain ordinary? Joe Techapanupreeda/Shutterstock Neil Dagnall, Manchester Metropolitan University From ghosts to ghouls, witches to wizards, Halloween is the one time of the year when people come together to celebrate everything #supernatural. But beyond the fancy dress and trick or treating, belief in ghosts is actually relatively common – with 38% of people classifying themselves as believers and a similar number have actually reported seeing one. The term “#ghost” refers to the idea that the spirits of the dead – human and animal – influence the physical world. And the idea of a haunting can often include anything from a sensed presence, or objects moving, to spirit activity. But in a world filled with science and reason, these “#hauntings” can often boil down to a very simple explanation. So with Halloween just around the corner, here are the top three scientific and psychological explanations for hauntings, spirits, spookiness and all things supernatural – although it should be noted that many important questions have yet to be resolved … 1. Because I told you so Attempts to explain hauntings often draw upon #psychological factors – such as suggestion – so being told a place is haunted is more likely to lead to ghostly goings-on. One classic study saw participants visiting five main areas of a theatre before completing a questionnaire to assess their feelings and perceptions. Prior to the tour, one group was told the location was haunted, while the other group was informed that the building was under renovation. Unsurprisingly, participants that were told the place was haunted experienced more intense experiences – similar to those of paranormal happenings. Verbal suggestion has also been shown to increase #paranormal perceptions – as shown in research on seance phenomena, paranormal key bending, and psychic reading – especially when the suggestion is consistent with existing #paranormal beliefs. No spirits here…Shutterstock But research in real-world settings has produced inconsistent results. A study in the supposedly haunted Hampton Court found that suggestion had no effect on participants’ expectations of experiencing unusual phenomena, or their tendency to attribute unusual phenomena to ghosts. So it is fair to say that the effects of suggestion vary depending upon a person’s beliefs. And of course, paranormal believers are prone to endorsing alleged paranormal phenomena – while skeptics will deny the existence of the paranormal. 2. Electromagnetic fields and spooky sounds Other explanations draw on environmental factors, such as electromagnetic fields and infrasound. Canadian neuroscientist Michael Persinger demonstrated that the application of varying electromagnetic fields to the temporal lobes of the brain could produce haunting experiences – such as perception of a presence, a feeling of God or sensations of being touched. And it has been noted that areas most associated with hauntings – such as Hampton Court – do possess erratic magnetic fields. Is that a figure I see before me?Shutterstock Similarly, infrasound – audio frequency below the range of human hearing – is also thought to be able to explain such phenomena. Several studies have linked infrasound and bizarre sensations. In one example, contemporary pieces of live music were laced with infrasound and the audience were then asked to describe their reactions to the music. More unusual experiences were reported when infrasound was present – chills down the spine, feeling nervous, waves of fear and uneasy or sorrowful emotions. 3. Toxic hallucinations “Supernatural” perceptions can also arise from reactions to toxic substances – such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and pesticide. It has also been suggested that fungal hallucinations – caused by toxic mold – could stimulate haunting-related perceptions. Probably best to stay out of the graveyard if you’ve been on the mushrooms.Shutterstock Shane Rogers and his team from Clarkson University in the US observed similarities between paranormal experiences and the hallucinogenic effects of fungal spores. This may explain why #ghost sightings often occur in older buildings with inadequate ventilation and poor air quality. The notion is not new and experts have previously reported a similar effect associated with old books. They claim that mere exposure to toxic moulds can trigger significant mental or neurological symptoms, which create perceptions similar to those reported during haunting experiences. Pauly Jail Live Ghost Hunt and Professional Investigation 2018

Webb #Paranormal Group’s Pauly Jail Live #Ghost Hunt was held at the Pauly Jail aka #Bullock County Jail Museum is located in #Union Springs, AL. It is a Gothic Style Red Brick building with three stories. The women inmates were held on the first floor, while the second and third floor was reserved for men. The third floor was designated for the more hardened criminals such as murderers and rapists. The trapped door with the pulley with which the rope was attached too was the gallows where executions could be performed on the third floor. The jail’s inside walls and bars of the cells where all painted black. This just added to the gloominess that already existed. There was no air conditioning for the inmates during the hot #Alabama summers. Inmates were often stacked into the cells like sardines with 10-12 people in the cells that are approximately 8 ft. x 8 ft. Imagine the heat, sweat, and misery of being stuck in the cage painted black. The stench had to be horrific. The inmates could drink from the sink to help cool off a bit but most cells didn’t have a toilet or sink in it. The privilege of getting to go outside in the courtyard for some fresh air must have been exhilarating. Pauly Jail Live Ghost Hunt and Professional #Investigation Webb Paranormal Group hosted a public Ghost Hunt on the evening of Saturday, October 20, 2018, at Pauly Jail in Union Springs, Alabama. Our guest on the hunt started arriving around 5 P.M. and was anxious once seeing the looming Pauly Jail. Shortly afterward, Teresa Fikes gave them a tour of the infamous Pauly Jail and the Old City Cemetery along with a short stroll downtown. This gave the guest a little historical information to help aid in the investigation that was later to come. Once the tour was down, refreshments were offered by Webb Paranormal Group members while Stan Fikes, WPG Director/lead investigator went over the protocols of investigating. Shajuana Coleman, Team Training Manager, was set up with an equipment table for the guest to check out the piece of equipment they wanted to use during the investigation. When the guest was finished with their investigation they would return the equipment to Shajuana, who marked it as returned. Then armored with a new view of things, and some really awesome equipment, the actual ghost hunt began. Professional #Paranormal Investigators After the live Ghost Hunt was over with, the WPG team and guest enjoyed a Chili Dog supper. Each member contributed something to the feast. Vera Haney kept us supplied with Coffee, a much-welcomed drink in the business. This much-needed break gave the team time to rest and refresh body and mind. It also gave the Haints time to rest too. After all the public guest had left for the night; it was time to get down to some real investigating. Webb Paranormal Group along with RIP from Enterprise, Alabama and Blaine Rohan from Wetumpka, Alabama joined forces to discover the secrets of Pauly Jail aka Bullock County Jail Museum. Out came the DVR, Special Rigs with Cameras, meters, drones, and digital recorders. Even some old school tape recorders were brought out. A Jacob’s Ladder was there as well, just to add some flair to the scenes. #J.W. Mann’s Grandson Special Guests, James and Dona Brooks, joined everyone that night for some very informative #research of the old Haint. Mr. James Brooks was the grandson of J.W. Mann, a former inmate that died in the jail on the second floor. Mr. Mann was killed when a cigarette he lit caught the mattress in his cell on fire. He died of smoke inhalation on Christmas Eve 1960. He is just one of the ghost of Pauly Jail that we encountered. It is firmly believed he had a message for his grandson. There were quite a few #anomalies that were experienced that night, some explainable some not. Make sure to catch our next post to find out what the results of the investigation were.

What is a Doppelganger? How to Rid Yourself

A #Doppelganger is a German word meaning “look-alike” or “double-walker” and is the non-biological look-alike of a living person. In folklore, a doppelganger is representative of a #paranormal or ghostly occurrence that is sometimes viewed as an omen of bad luck. A doppelganger has no shadow or reflection and it causes a lot of damage and complications by inserting harmful thoughts into the person’s mind. It is believed that if one sees their own doppelganger, it is a sign of impending back luck or even #death. Some traditions believe a doppelganger is a person’s evil twin; currently referred to as a “twin stranger.” The term “doppelganger” is most frequently applied in a more common or impartial capacity, and sometimes as a slang term as a way of illustrating the physical or behavioral similarities a person may have towards another. Some Examples of a Doppelganger An example of a DG in literature was the #ghost of #Hamlet’s father in #Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. Shakespeare used the idea of a doppelganger to create the plot of revenge against the murder of Hamlet’s father. Ideas were put into Hamlet’s mind by an #apparition of his father who told him he had been murdered. In the short story by Edgar Allen Poe, “William Wilson” the idea of a doppelganger of the boy, William, he meets another boy in school who has the same name, looks alarmingly similar to him, and even dresses and walks as he does. The double of William’s only dissimilarity to him was that he only spoke in a whisper. After being haunted by his doppelganger, his entire life, in the chilling conclusion, William attempts to stab him with a knife, only to look in the mirror and witness he has stabbed himself. The famous “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” story by #Robert Louis Stevenson is another example of a doppelganger situation. How can you rid yourself of a doppelganger? Freudian psychoanalytic views a doppelganger as being the part of a person’s self they are struggling with to gain control over. The doppelganger of a person has features of similarity as well as opposition to the unique person it duplicates. In order for a person to be rid of their evil twin, they must first confront the aspects of their psyche the double represents, by confronting those suppressed feelings one can finally be free of the doppelganger in their life.

Investigation of the Dancing Ghost “Grancer” Harrison

On Saturday, October 22, 2016, Webb Paranormal Group assisted another local paranormal group, Rip Investigations, in researching and investigating the rumors told over the last 200 years about the Dancing Ghost of William “Grancer or Grand Sir” Harrison in the Harrison Cemetery in Kinston, Alabama. The cemetery is located in Kinston, AL on what was once the old home place of William Harrison who was affectionally called respectfully “Grand Sir”. Mr. Harrison was a prominent businessman and cotton farmer/planter in the early 1800s. He was married to Nancy Justice Harrison who lies next to him in the cemetery. The Harrison’s had ten children. Grancer Harrison was well known in the Kinston area for his horse races, Barbeques, and dances in a Dance Hall he had built primarily for his plantation. When he realized that his time was near to end, he began planning for his burial. His last wishes before he died was for his family to bury him dressed in his dancing clothes, clogging shoes, his fiddle in his hand while lying on his feather bed. He also wanted the dance parties to go on after he had departed this world. His tomb was to be located within earshot of his dance hall. Rumor has it that on a Saturday night during the midnight hour people can still hear the fiddle playing and a deep male voice call the dance out. Some have even reported to seeing the ghostly figure dancing and hearing the tapping of his shoes as he dances along. Another rumor was that he had slaves bury pots of gold near the dance hall or the grave. Vandals have tried and tried to find this but only succeeded in finding empty pots. One occasion the vandals blew up the tomb scattering Grancer Harrison’s bone fragments. Now are you wondering what the two paranormal research groups found? Some very interesting events happened while we were there. Around midnight, we decided to play some Scottish Fiddle music. What happened next was astounding. The K2 meters owned by both groups went off to the beat of the music. Then our cameraman, Chris Woods, noticed a strange light bouncing back and forth along the tomb itself. The cameraperson for RIP Investigations also moved in to get a clear shot of this phenomenon. There was an orb caught jumping from the side of the tomb too. When the music stopped then, the light stopped, when we changed the music to something slow the light slowed down, and when the music was fast, the light speeded up. Watch the video to judge for yourself. Is this the Ghost of William “Grancer/ Grand Sir” Harrison dancing to the fiddle music he loved so much?
