The Top Three Scientific Explanations for Ghost Sightings

#Paranormal or just plain ordinary? Joe Techapanupreeda/Shutterstock Neil Dagnall, Manchester Metropolitan University From ghosts to ghouls, witches to wizards, Halloween is the one time of the year when people come together to celebrate everything #supernatural. But beyond the fancy dress and trick or treating, belief in ghosts is actually relatively common – with 38% of people classifying themselves as believers and a similar number have actually reported seeing one. The term “#ghost” refers to the idea that the spirits of the dead – human and animal – influence the physical world. And the idea of a haunting can often include anything from a sensed presence, or objects moving, to spirit activity. But in a world filled with science and reason, these “#hauntings” can often boil down to a very simple explanation. So with Halloween just around the corner, here are the top three scientific and psychological explanations for hauntings, spirits, spookiness and all things supernatural – although it should be noted that many important questions have yet to be resolved … 1. Because I told you so Attempts to explain hauntings often draw upon #psychological factors – such as suggestion – so being told a place is haunted is more likely to lead to ghostly goings-on. One classic study saw participants visiting five main areas of a theatre before completing a questionnaire to assess their feelings and perceptions. Prior to the tour, one group was told the location was haunted, while the other group was informed that the building was under renovation. Unsurprisingly, participants that were told the place was haunted experienced more intense experiences – similar to those of paranormal happenings. Verbal suggestion has also been shown to increase #paranormal perceptions – as shown in research on seance phenomena, paranormal key bending, and psychic reading – especially when the suggestion is consistent with existing #paranormal beliefs. No spirits here…Shutterstock But research in real-world settings has produced inconsistent results. A study in the supposedly haunted Hampton Court found that suggestion had no effect on participants’ expectations of experiencing unusual phenomena, or their tendency to attribute unusual phenomena to ghosts. So it is fair to say that the effects of suggestion vary depending upon a person’s beliefs. And of course, paranormal believers are prone to endorsing alleged paranormal phenomena – while skeptics will deny the existence of the paranormal. 2. Electromagnetic fields and spooky sounds Other explanations draw on environmental factors, such as electromagnetic fields and infrasound. Canadian neuroscientist Michael Persinger demonstrated that the application of varying electromagnetic fields to the temporal lobes of the brain could produce haunting experiences – such as perception of a presence, a feeling of God or sensations of being touched. And it has been noted that areas most associated with hauntings – such as Hampton Court – do possess erratic magnetic fields. Is that a figure I see before me?Shutterstock Similarly, infrasound – audio frequency below the range of human hearing – is also thought to be able to explain such phenomena. Several studies have linked infrasound and bizarre sensations. In one example, contemporary pieces of live music were laced with infrasound and the audience were then asked to describe their reactions to the music. More unusual experiences were reported when infrasound was present – chills down the spine, feeling nervous, waves of fear and uneasy or sorrowful emotions. 3. Toxic hallucinations “Supernatural” perceptions can also arise from reactions to toxic substances – such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and pesticide. It has also been suggested that fungal hallucinations – caused by toxic mold – could stimulate haunting-related perceptions. Probably best to stay out of the graveyard if you’ve been on the mushrooms.Shutterstock Shane Rogers and his team from Clarkson University in the US observed similarities between paranormal experiences and the hallucinogenic effects of fungal spores. This may explain why #ghost sightings often occur in older buildings with inadequate ventilation and poor air quality. The notion is not new and experts have previously reported a similar effect associated with old books. They claim that mere exposure to toxic moulds can trigger significant mental or neurological symptoms, which create perceptions similar to those reported during haunting experiences. Pauly Jail Live Ghost Hunt and Professional Investigation 2018

Webb #Paranormal Group’s Pauly Jail Live #Ghost Hunt was held at the Pauly Jail aka #Bullock County Jail Museum is located in #Union Springs, AL. It is a Gothic Style Red Brick building with three stories. The women inmates were held on the first floor, while the second and third floor was reserved for men. The third floor was designated for the more hardened criminals such as murderers and rapists. The trapped door with the pulley with which the rope was attached too was the gallows where executions could be performed on the third floor. The jail’s inside walls and bars of the cells where all painted black. This just added to the gloominess that already existed. There was no air conditioning for the inmates during the hot #Alabama summers. Inmates were often stacked into the cells like sardines with 10-12 people in the cells that are approximately 8 ft. x 8 ft. Imagine the heat, sweat, and misery of being stuck in the cage painted black. The stench had to be horrific. The inmates could drink from the sink to help cool off a bit but most cells didn’t have a toilet or sink in it. The privilege of getting to go outside in the courtyard for some fresh air must have been exhilarating. Pauly Jail Live Ghost Hunt and Professional #Investigation Webb Paranormal Group hosted a public Ghost Hunt on the evening of Saturday, October 20, 2018, at Pauly Jail in Union Springs, Alabama. Our guest on the hunt started arriving around 5 P.M. and was anxious once seeing the looming Pauly Jail. Shortly afterward, Teresa Fikes gave them a tour of the infamous Pauly Jail and the Old City Cemetery along with a short stroll downtown. This gave the guest a little historical information to help aid in the investigation that was later to come. Once the tour was down, refreshments were offered by Webb Paranormal Group members while Stan Fikes, WPG Director/lead investigator went over the protocols of investigating. Shajuana Coleman, Team Training Manager, was set up with an equipment table for the guest to check out the piece of equipment they wanted to use during the investigation. When the guest was finished with their investigation they would return the equipment to Shajuana, who marked it as returned. Then armored with a new view of things, and some really awesome equipment, the actual ghost hunt began. Professional #Paranormal Investigators After the live Ghost Hunt was over with, the WPG team and guest enjoyed a Chili Dog supper. Each member contributed something to the feast. Vera Haney kept us supplied with Coffee, a much-welcomed drink in the business. This much-needed break gave the team time to rest and refresh body and mind. It also gave the Haints time to rest too. After all the public guest had left for the night; it was time to get down to some real investigating. Webb Paranormal Group along with RIP from Enterprise, Alabama and Blaine Rohan from Wetumpka, Alabama joined forces to discover the secrets of Pauly Jail aka Bullock County Jail Museum. Out came the DVR, Special Rigs with Cameras, meters, drones, and digital recorders. Even some old school tape recorders were brought out. A Jacob’s Ladder was there as well, just to add some flair to the scenes. #J.W. Mann’s Grandson Special Guests, James and Dona Brooks, joined everyone that night for some very informative #research of the old Haint. Mr. James Brooks was the grandson of J.W. Mann, a former inmate that died in the jail on the second floor. Mr. Mann was killed when a cigarette he lit caught the mattress in his cell on fire. He died of smoke inhalation on Christmas Eve 1960. He is just one of the ghost of Pauly Jail that we encountered. It is firmly believed he had a message for his grandson. There were quite a few #anomalies that were experienced that night, some explainable some not. Make sure to catch our next post to find out what the results of the investigation were.

Discrepancies of the Evidence at Pauly Jail

Bullock County Jail aka #Pauly Jail in #Union Springs, AL What mystery involves previous the inmates of the infamous Pauly Jail aka Bullock County Jail Museum in Union Springs, #Alabama? Do they linger on there? Discrepancies of the Evidence With two inmates that are rumored to have been executed in the jail, I would like to offer something for the reader to think about when reading over the evidence that is presented by others in their investigations of the old jailhouse. “One of the oldest surviving jails in the state, the Pauly Jail, was erected in 1897 and used, as a film set in 2004, is a three-story red brick structure.” http://www.unionspringsalabama.com/Pauly-Jail.html #Pauline McCoy Many have reported seeing or finding evidence of a Pauline McCoy at Pauly Jail. Pauline was convicted of the murder of a young woman of 14 years old and accused of doing this over a coat. How can this be when she was hung in 1888, which is 9 years before the erection of Pauly Jail? This is my source: The Daily Picayune, October 13, 1888 (page 3) The Daily Picayune had supplied a scanty few additional details from Pauline’s supposed jailhouse confession a few weeks before (September 5, 1888) Also, you will find this statement on the website for Union Springs: “The Bullock County Jail of 1897 replaced the jail of 1868, which stood on West Hardaway Street” http://www.unionspringsalabama.com/Pauly-Jail.html #Aberdeen Johnson Aberdeen Johnson is another of the inmates of Pauly Jail that met his death but was it at the jail or somewhere else? He is also said to use the name Walker too. #Webb Paranormal Group has some doubt after being at the jail for the last two seasons searching for evidence and many trips to the libraries. Let’s look at the discrepancies of the evidence below. Read this Excerpt: A shot rang out as the mob marched along half a mile south of town and it was found that a young man has wounded the #negro in the right hip with a double-barrel derringer. He managed, however, to keep moving and was marched on for over two miles. A halt was made at the railroad track and a discussion had as to whether to take the black criminal on to the scene of his crime, where the object of his lust could see him, or whether to hang him at once.  The negro was getting weak from the wound and there was a rumor that soldiers were on a special train sent out from Montgomery, so it was decided to hang him to a tree on the outside of the road. A dozen men took Johnson to the tree. Then an old man, probably 65 years old, climbed the tree and hauled away on the rope which was soon made fast. The order was given for everyone who wished to take a shot at the negro to line up and when the old man got out of the tree probably 150 shots were fired into his body. As far as can be learned the negro did not confess.  http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=86347 This newspaper article states he was marched “along half a mile south of town” One mile is 5280 feet divided by half is 2640 feet. I have marked a black line on this map from Pauly Jail to an area a half mile south of the Pauly Jail which is way past the train tracks area that was removed. You will see it is way past the City Cemetery, which is where the red arrow is pointing too. I do not see how he was hanged in the cemetery. He is not even buried in this cemetery either. He is buried in Beat 3. I am not sure where it is but it is not in the old City Cemetery just a few feet over from Pauly Jail. There have been many tales over the years of the happenings at the infamous Pauly Jail. It is our duty to search for the truth and report the evidence that we each find ourselves. We do not rely on the rumors of others. Webb Paranormal Group seeks to go beyond just listening to rumors by performing in-depth research using many techniques. Good research is just the beginning of dispelling such Discrepancies of the Evidence.

What is a Doppelganger? How to Rid Yourself

A #Doppelganger is a German word meaning “look-alike” or “double-walker” and is the non-biological look-alike of a living person. In folklore, a doppelganger is representative of a #paranormal or ghostly occurrence that is sometimes viewed as an omen of bad luck. A doppelganger has no shadow or reflection and it causes a lot of damage and complications by inserting harmful thoughts into the person’s mind. It is believed that if one sees their own doppelganger, it is a sign of impending back luck or even #death. Some traditions believe a doppelganger is a person’s evil twin; currently referred to as a “twin stranger.” The term “doppelganger” is most frequently applied in a more common or impartial capacity, and sometimes as a slang term as a way of illustrating the physical or behavioral similarities a person may have towards another. Some Examples of a Doppelganger An example of a DG in literature was the #ghost of #Hamlet’s father in #Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. Shakespeare used the idea of a doppelganger to create the plot of revenge against the murder of Hamlet’s father. Ideas were put into Hamlet’s mind by an #apparition of his father who told him he had been murdered. In the short story by Edgar Allen Poe, “William Wilson” the idea of a doppelganger of the boy, William, he meets another boy in school who has the same name, looks alarmingly similar to him, and even dresses and walks as he does. The double of William’s only dissimilarity to him was that he only spoke in a whisper. After being haunted by his doppelganger, his entire life, in the chilling conclusion, William attempts to stab him with a knife, only to look in the mirror and witness he has stabbed himself. The famous “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” story by #Robert Louis Stevenson is another example of a doppelganger situation. How can you rid yourself of a doppelganger? Freudian psychoanalytic views a doppelganger as being the part of a person’s self they are struggling with to gain control over. The doppelganger of a person has features of similarity as well as opposition to the unique person it duplicates. In order for a person to be rid of their evil twin, they must first confront the aspects of their psyche the double represents, by confronting those suppressed feelings one can finally be free of the doppelganger in their life.

Why Easter Frightens Us

Why does #Easter frighten us? Okay, Easter doesn’t truly frighten “us.” For most of us, it might mean a trip to church, a basket full of colorful, delicious candies, an Easter egg hunt, a celebratory family meal, and, if we’re young enough, an opportunity to meet the bunny himself at the local shopping mall for a photo op. Many people skip the church part altogether and focus on the colorful baskets and egg hunts, making Easter a Sunday filled with jubilant glee. In the Bible, #Jesus died on Good Friday and was resurrected on Easter Sunday, rising from the dead and ascending to heaven. With all due respect to the members of the Christian faith, Jesus was dead between Friday and Sunday, before He was risen. For a child, that thought can be quite confusing, macabre and #frightening in and of itself. However, in the church, Easter is not a time for fear or distress; rather, it’s a celebration. Easter is not a time to dwell on death; but rather the concept of rebirth in His name. Easter represents the end of sorrow and the beginning of hope. The end of grief and suffering, and a grand display of His love for mankind. A display of God’s power as shown by His son, who died for our sins. Solemn, yes, but ultimately, Easter is a time for gratitude and joy among Christians, proof of His miracle and His ascension. Proof of the power of faith, and that death is not the end. Proof of enduring love. Somehow, various stories about what happens on Easter have evolved, much to the joy of the confectionary industry. In the US, we have the #Easter Bunny, who, like Santa, visits us in the middle of the night and leaves us with chocolate and jellybean filled baskets (as long as we don’t see him). In France, there’s a flying bell (yes, seriously). From the idea of a human-sized bunny entering our homes in the middle of the night to the concept of Jesus rising from the dead, there are several elements of Easter that can certainly frighten a child. For a visual aid, check out this collection of terrifying Easter bunnies. For an even more brutal interpretation, check out this scene from director Kevin Smith’s film #Holidays.

“What Exactly Does Webb Paranormal Group Do During A Paranormal Investigation?”

“What happens during a paranormal investigation?” “What exactly do you do?” #Webb Paranormal Group gets asked on many occasions. There are many groups of people who investigate the #paranormal, and each of them do things their own way. Here is a glimpse into the way of Webb Paranormal Group and what happens during our #paranormal investigation. Our paranormal #investigation begins when a #client calls our number to discuss Webb Paranormal Group investigating their property. During this time, one of our Co-founders listens to the issues the client is having and an initial #interview is set up. Each interview varies depending on the claims.  The co-founders listen to establish where to begin the investigation and to take notice of where to place our cameras. Usually, during this interview process, a #release form is signed by everyone stating whether the client allows, or does not allow, their photograph to be published in our posts, blogs, etc. This is completely OK with Webb Paranormal Group! We don’t do this for publicity or money, but only to help those in need. The co-founder of the group then brings all the information gathered to the members. This is the time when the co-founder lets the group know what we have coming up. The group will discuss times we are free and able to go to the location. We value punctuality, as do our clients. Beginning on time makes the whole investigation go smoothly, as we are not in a rush and there are no frazzled nerves or aggravation. Now to begin! We get inside, do a final shorter interview with the whole group there to see if anything new has happened. Then we are ready to begin. We start by breaking out the cameras, running cords, and hooking them to our monitors to watch them live. The initial #setup time, final interview included, takes about an hour. After that is all done, we begin using our #tools with the #EVP recorder. This helps to hear what #Spirit is telling us when we play it back, and it usually sounds like a whisper so upon review we have to pay extra careful attention to make sure we don’t miss anything. We also have other tools, and one of them is a KII meter. Photo Credit to Teresa Fikes The investigators then wrap up all of our equipment, sure to leave no mess behind.  After the investigation, the client and Co-founders go over the evidence collected and discuss whether to cleanse the property.

Haunted Pauly Jail in Union Springs Pauly Jail is one of the oldest established correctional facilities in the state of #Alabama, the #Bullock County Jail, was erected in 1897. It was utilized as a film set in 2004.  Gothic Victorian Architecture The three-story red brick Victorian Gothic style of building is almost square in its design plan. Cement covers the foundation and the lower courses of the brick. Investigation of the Dancing Ghost “Grancer” Harrison

On Saturday, October 22, 2016, Webb Paranormal Group assisted another local paranormal group, Rip Investigations, in researching and investigating the rumors told over the last 200 years about the Dancing Ghost of William “Grancer or Grand Sir” Harrison in the Harrison Cemetery in Kinston, Alabama. The cemetery is located in Kinston, AL on what was once the old home place of William Harrison who was affectionally called respectfully “Grand Sir”. Mr. Harrison was a prominent businessman and cotton farmer/planter in the early 1800s. He was married to Nancy Justice Harrison who lies next to him in the cemetery. The Harrison’s had ten children. Grancer Harrison was well known in the Kinston area for his horse races, Barbeques, and dances in a Dance Hall he had built primarily for his plantation. When he realized that his time was near to end, he began planning for his burial. His last wishes before he died was for his family to bury him dressed in his dancing clothes, clogging shoes, his fiddle in his hand while lying on his feather bed. He also wanted the dance parties to go on after he had departed this world. His tomb was to be located within earshot of his dance hall. Rumor has it that on a Saturday night during the midnight hour people can still hear the fiddle playing and a deep male voice call the dance out. Some have even reported to seeing the ghostly figure dancing and hearing the tapping of his shoes as he dances along. Another rumor was that he had slaves bury pots of gold near the dance hall or the grave. Vandals have tried and tried to find this but only succeeded in finding empty pots. One occasion the vandals blew up the tomb scattering Grancer Harrison’s bone fragments. Now are you wondering what the two paranormal research groups found? Some very interesting events happened while we were there. Around midnight, we decided to play some Scottish Fiddle music. What happened next was astounding. The K2 meters owned by both groups went off to the beat of the music. Then our cameraman, Chris Woods, noticed a strange light bouncing back and forth along the tomb itself. The cameraperson for RIP Investigations also moved in to get a clear shot of this phenomenon. There was an orb caught jumping from the side of the tomb too. When the music stopped then, the light stopped, when we changed the music to something slow the light slowed down, and when the music was fast, the light speeded up. Watch the video to judge for yourself. Is this the Ghost of William “Grancer/ Grand Sir” Harrison dancing to the fiddle music he loved so much?

Difference Between Ghost Hunting and Paranormal Investigations

Do you know the difference between #ghost hunting and #paranormal investigations? What exactly is #Ghost Hunting? What is Paranormal Investigation? The purpose of this blog is to give you a little insight into the difference between these two. Ghost Hunting Ghost hunting is the act of searching in a place that has no history of any sightings or any ghost. Then trying to find something using cameras, photos, etc. Paranormal Investigations Paranormal investigations are visiting a place that is known to be haunted for the purpose of recording new data (photos, audio, video, temperatures, etc.), taking notes, doing interviews, and gathering some other evidence to either prove or disprove a haunting or unusual activity. #Paranormal investigators can also include assisting the owners of the place in moving on with their lives. Perhaps by getting the spirits or ghost to leave the place for a better place, where they can be at rest. If this is what is wanted by the people living in the home or working in the business that is being investigated. However, some people just want to know that there is no danger to them and will just leave things alone. Assistance or Consulting Assistance can, also, mean directly assisting the owner with the situation, or putting the owner in contact with an experienced group or individuals who will help to resolve the situation. The Consulting can be something as easy as providing them with a little education on the procedure of the paranormal investigation, and what they can expect.
